Student Union Fee
If you are enrolled at a university supervised by the Studentenwerk SH, you have to pay a contribution of 63.00 Euro per semester to the Studentenwerk SH (Student Union Fee).
This fee is imposed by the respective universities and must be paid before enrolment.
In addition to the Studentenwerk SH fee, the Studentenwerk SH is also responsible for collecting other student fees such as the AStA fee including the semester ticket, registration fee, late fee, etc. for the universities and the AStA. The Studentenwerk SH retains the Student Union Fee and transfers the AStA fees to the AStAs and the fees of the universities to the respective university.
Who has to pay the Studentenwerksbeitrag?
If you are enrolled at a university supervised by the Studentenwerk SH, you have to pay a fee of 63,00 Euro per semester to the Studentenwerk SH.
Students are those persons who are enrolled at universities supervised by the Studentenwerk SH. Only full-time studies that are completed with a university or state examination or postgraduate studies that are carried out for research purposes or for professional specialization after completion are considered to be studies.
The obligation to pay fees also extends to students on leave of absence.
When can I apply for exemption or refund of the Student Union Fee?
You must apply for an exemption of the student union fee before the beginning of the semester for which the exemption is requested. Please use our "Application for Exemption or Refund of Student Union Fee" form and note the following deadlines:

According to § 5 of the fee statutes of the Studentenwerk SH, the fee will be refunded upon application if the exmatriculation or the revocation of enrollment occurred before the beginning of the semester for which the fee has already been paid. There are no deadlines to be observed.

What amount will be refunded?
If your application for exemption or refund is approved, you will receive a refund of the 63,00 Euros you paid.
Please apply to your AStA for exemption or refund of the AStA fee and the semester ticket.
How long does it take to process the application?
The processing of applications for exemption or refund can take up to 6 weeks. We would like to ask you to refrain from written or telephone queries. We will make every effort to process the applications as quickly as possible.
How high is the Studentenwerksbeitrag?
Since the summer semester 2019 the contribution is 63,00 Euro per semester.
Am I entitled to an exemption of the Student Union Fee?
According to § 4 of the fee statutes of the Studentenwerk SH, an exemption is possible in the following cases:
- The student has been granted leave of absence for the semester.
- The student can credibly demonstrate that it is not possible for him to use the services of the Studentenwerk, not even partially.
The student must apply for the exemption before the beginning of the semester.

When is the Student Union Fee due?
The fee is due upon enrollment or re-registration and it is payable to the Studentenwerk SH.
When you enroll or re-register at your university, you have to prove that you have paid the Student Union Fee for the semester you are enrolling or re-registering for. The examination of this is the responsibility of the university you enroll or re-register at.
Can I pay the Studentenwerksbeitrag in installments, hours or recieve reductions?
No, the fee cannot be waived, reduced or deferred.
Where do I transfer the Studentenwerksbeitrag to?
At the beginning of each semester or course of study you will receive a request from your university to pay your student fees. There is a separate account for each university, which you will be informed of via the university.
Can I pay the Studentenwerksbeitrag in cash oder by EC-card?
At our Service Point in the Mensa I in Kiel you can pay the Studentenwerksbeitrag in cash or by EC-card. Credit card payment is unfortunately not possible.
The opening hours are on Tuesday and Thursday from 11 am to 02 pm.
Since we want to abolish the possibility of cash payment in the long term, we would like to ask you to refrain from doing so from now on.
Do I have to pay the Student Union Fee, if i do not use the service of the Studentenwerk at all?
Yes, this is a solidarity fee, especially to finance the free services of the Studentenwerk.
In which cases is the Student Union Fee refunded?
According to § 5 of the fee statutes of the Studentenwerk SH a refund of the Student Union Fee is possible:
- In case of enrollment revocation prior to the beginning of the semester for which the fee was paid.
- In case of de-registration before the beginning of the semester for which the fee was paid.

What documents do I have to enclose with the application?
The following documents must be attached:
- Proof of deposit (e.g. copy of bank statement) AND
- Copy of the provisional (CAU only) or final exmatriculation certificate OR
- Proper certificate of exmatriculation OR
- Copy of new enrollment certificate in case of change of university OR
- Proof from the university of non-acceptance of the study place/cancellation confirmation OR
- Proof from the university of a leave of absence OR
- Credible evidence that it is impossible for the student to claim the benefits according to § 4, paragraph 2 of the fee statutes of the Studentenwerk SH.
PLEASE note that a request for de-registration is not sufficient.
